The Economic Offences Wing is one of the important Special Units of the Police Department functioning in the State of Tamil Nadu as per G.O. Ms. No.1697, Home (Courts-2A) Department, dated: 24.12.1999.
The wing has been a pioneer in the country in exclusively deal with various types of Economic offences viz, NBFCs Frauds Chit fund, large scale and cheating and violations of Prize Chits and Money circulation schemes (Banning) Act 1978. The EOW invokes TNPID Act 1997 & BUDS Act 2019 to deal with the NBFCs cases. Despite the tireless efforts being taken by this wing both in preventive and curative aspects with regard to prosecution and curbing of the crimes, the same is found increasing in recent years due to the evolution of concepts such as internet, digital cryptocurrency and large-scale technological developments. Hence, it is inevitable that the institution needs to become more dynamic at par with the nature of the Economic Offences occurring today.
The Commercial Crime Investigation wing C.I.D. (CCIW CID) was constituted in G.O. M.S. No.170, Home Department dated: 20.01.1971 to investigate offences relating to defalcation of funds in Co-operative Societies. The CCIW and EOW units have been merged into composite EOW units as per G.O Ms.No.435, Home (Pol.XIX) Dept., dated 28.10.2020.
